Malaysia-based accelerator and early-stage investor 1337 Ventures today announced the three Malaysian startups that are the winners of the pre-accelerator programme Alpha Startups.

The three startups are DobyBox (24-hour mobile-powered locker laundry collection service), HomeTaste (on-demand home-cooked meal delivery), and Bayar (a social mobile wallet).

The startups receive US$25,000-worth of funding, Amazon Web Services support, and mentorship from 1337 Ventures.

Apart from 1337 Ventures, HomeTaste also received co-investment from Andy Sitt of 123RF who invested through the accelerator. The team was also the graduate of a recent inaugural Digi Incub8 programme, which was held in partnership with Alpha Startups.

Bayar also secured additional funding from an undisclosed angel investors from Seek Asia and Google Japan.

The programme accepted 20 teams with 11 teams passing to the demo day event. More than half of the teams are in ideation stage with no minimum viable products, while the rest had basic prototypes.

“With each batch, the level of applicants are significantly improving. We’re seeing more domain experts attempting to launch products to significantly expand their businesses. From the likes of an accountant attempting to build a micro SME-focussed tax and accounting system to a launderette owner attempting to find new ways to scale his existing business,” said 1337 Ventures founding partner Bikesh Lakhmichand.

In the five-day programme, the startups received mentoring and trainings from the likes of Facebook, iPay88, and Lim Jo Yan & Co.

1337 Ventures also announced that the opening of the next intake of Alpha Startups. The programme is jointly organised with Media Prima Labs and with the support of MDEC and Digi.

For the next intake, the focus will be on game development vertical.
