Maria Health gets funded [Manila Bulletin]

Philippine-based healthcare startup Maria Health has announced that it has secured additional investments to expand its operations in the country. The online healthcare insurance platform is backed by Wavemaker Partners, along with angel investors from Silicon Valley, and has partnered with top HMOs in the region. Maria Health plans to used the funds to beef up its operations in the Philippines. The link above has more information.

 

Sunway iLabs to invest US$480K [e27]

Malaysia accelerator Sunway iLabs has announced that it will be investing RM2 million (US$480K) in up to 10 startups next year. Sunway iLabs is a a partnership between Sunway University, Sunway Ventures, and Sunway Group.

 

RedDoorz to expand into new cities [e27]

Budget hotel booking platform announced that they will invest US$10 million to expand into 9 cities in Indonesia over the next 12 months. RedDoorz claims to have serviced over half a million customers, and has partnered with 500 properties in Indonesia to date.

oBike adopts geolocation for 1M bikes [Press Release]

Bike-sharing company oBike partners with UnaBiz to roll out geolocation services for 1 million bikes beginning in Singapore and Taiwan. This move counters cases of bike misuse, vandalism, illegal parking, and loss that has plagued bike-sharing companies. Once the technology is rolled out, the bikes will be able to transmit their location directly to oBike cloud at regular intervals, independent of user’s blutooth or cellular network.

 

Bluegogo is reportedly closing down [TechCrunch]

China’s third-largest bike-sharing service is reportedly closing down. Bluegogo had raised US$90 million from investors and is operating over 700,000 bikes across China. While there are no official announcements from Bluegogo, its website seem to have gone missing, along with their CEO.

 

Free internet

Thailand plans to give free internet for the poor [e27]

The Thailand government is planning to include SIM cards with welfare plans to give internet access to the country’s poor. The SIM cards, which can will only be able to access the internet, will be distributed through the state-owned telco.
