From news to advice from VCs, these newsletters will help make that morning commute more productive
It would be hard to find a bigger fan of the email newsletter than myself. I find them to be a great way to spend 10-15 minutes and even created my own as a ‘weekend hobby’ (this is 100% trued and it helps me vent my non-tech thoughts).
A good email newsletter helps people understand the important news of the day (or week) by sifting through the noise to find what is actually important.
It also can be much more entertaining than traditional news reading and make that morning commute a bit more enjoyable.
The tech industry in Southeast Asia has some fantastic newsletters (e27’s Daily Digest included 😛 )and here are my five favourite.
Did I miss any? Let me know below.
Asia Tech Review
This is the weekly newsletter from TechCrunch’s Jon Russell. Naturally, as a reporter he has an excellent sense of what is happening across the region.
While e27 readers may live in Southeast Asia and be focussed on the region, Asia Tech Review is useful to learn about India, China and the random articles that have tickled Russell’s curiosity.
I enjoy this newsletter because occasionally Russell will get busy and not post for a week or two. It adds to the authenticity of the newsletter and makes it clear its just something he does for the hell of it.
The Daily Brief
The product must be good if we are going to shout-out the competition. This is the daily wrap of the news on DealstreetAsia and arrives in the morning to keep readers up-to-date.
What this newsletter does well is minimise the frills and allow people to scroll through the headlines until something catches their fancy.
Dealstreet Asia is not startup-focussed so it does require some understanding of which companies are relevant, but for people who who spend all-day everyday in this world, it is useful for a quick catch-up.
50 Folds Newsletter
One would guess (correctly) that any company pitching itself as an [anti]accelerator would create interesting content. 50 Folds is the product of industry veteran Alexander Jarvis and is full of useful hacks, in-depth startup advice (that often gets into the weeds) and the occasional macro-economic analysis.
For example, this article provides advice on how to create a useful internal email system. This was not something I even thought about until reading the post. Now, it seems like a no-brainer.
Grayscale VC
Grayscale is the blog of Nikhil Kapur of Gree Ventures. It is useful for companies (especially early-stage startups) going through their funding round.

Kapur has a regular column called “Negotiating your seed round” that helps entrepreneurs keep up with the latest fundraising Dos and Donts
Grayscale also gets into opinions as Kapur is not afraid to approach topics like gender diversity in tech and the Founder-turned-VC phenomenon.
eCommerceIQ
This is the best newsletter in Southeast Asia for keeping track of the e-commerce industry in Southeast Asia. E-commerce is still the most important industry in the region’s startup economy, so it is useful to keep an eye on the happenings.
For people entering the e-commerce space, this is MUST to ensure adaptability and constant evolution of your company.
