Aisle is a members-only online singles community that claims to have facilitated over 35,000 connections

Aisle, an online dating app owned by Bangalore-based Aisle Network, has secured an undisclosed amount in funding from CIO Angel Network, with participation from Konglo Ventures, White Unicorn Ventures and online deal-making platform LetsVenture.

The startup will use the funding to hire new developers and content creators, its Founder and CEO Able Joseph told e27.

“Online matchmaking in India is a gender, age, proximity, faith and mother tongue-based business. We think it’s also essential to understand a person’s taste and intent. Aisle’s balance in these criteria are good and this balance adds much value to singles looking for meaningful relationships, especially women,” said Able Joseph, Founder and CEO of Aisle.

Established in 2014, Aisle is a members-only singles community aiming to tread the middle path between traditional matrimony sites and casual dating apps for Indians around the world. Unlike fun and casual dating apps, Aisle is a closed community of handpicked, urban, like-minded Indians, South Asian Indians, from around the world looking to have meaningful and long-lasting relationships.

With an 8-member team, the app claims to have 8 million profile views to date. Nearly 41 per cent of its users are women. “We are among the top 3 grossing Indian dating apps, but we have spent only a fraction of what other apps have done on marketing. We have facilitated over 35,000 connections; these are reciprocal connections, not to be mistaken with Tinder connections,” added Joseph.

Aisle claims it has managed to attract many indie celebrities, including popular standup comedians, ad film actors, models, yoga instructors, entrepreneurs, chefs, and musicians.

Aisle had earlier raised US$183,000 in pre-Series A funding from TermSheet and ah! Ventures in January last year.

“Indian millennials are focusing on personalised details, lifestyle, and increasingly going mobile for engagement
with their future partner. Aisle is solving this broken system in match making and matrimony to serve this next
generation. They are creating the most profitable business by connecting people with people using social networks,”
stated Sanjay Mehta, CIO Angel Network.

“The space is cluttered with casual dating apps and most new investors would have missed the wave of
shaadi.coms and other matrimonial sites. In this context, Aisle offers an opportunity to still participate in this
space while strongly differentiating from existing players. Aisle is addressing a genuine problem and the approach
they have taken is quite interesting in terms of the business model, product design and the curation process,” said
Vinod Jose of Konglo Ventures

As of 2015, online dating is a massive US$3.8 billion global market that is seeing strong growth in India and China.
