American e-commerce giant Amazon is setting its sights on a greater Southeast Asian presence through a launch in Singapore, according to a report by TechCrunch.

Sources told TechCrunch that Amazon is ramping up plans by quietly acquiring new assets such as refrigerated trucks, and hiring new staff. Additionally, Amazon may also offer Amazon Prime and AmazonFresh grocery service in Singapore.

The expected roll-out date for this initiative is rumoured to be in the first quarter of 2017.

This news comes just weeks after it announced the launch of its membership programme Amazon Prime in China.

Amazon is also reportedly looking to enter the Indonesian market, although its strategy for Southeast Asia will be focussed mainly on Singapore, initially.

If this comes to pass, this poses a serious and imminent threat to China’s Alibaba, which acquired Southeast Asia’s leading e-commerce portal Lazada in April this year, then, just today acquired major Singapore grocery delivery service RedMart through Lazada.
