Singapore-based early stage venture capital firm SeedPlus today announced the appointment of entrepreneur and tech investor Lim Der Shing as its first Venture Advisor.

According to a press statement, Lim will advise the fund on its investments and scaling strategies and work closely with SeedPlus portfolio companies in the areas of strategy, sales, and leadership.

The company also stated that the appointment is aligned with SeedPlus’ commitment to provide operating expertise to its portfolio companies to achieve regional and global success stories from Asia.

“Der Shing’s wealth of experience in entrepreneurship and investment, coupled with his deep network around the world, will be an incredibly valuable asset to our current and future portfolio companies and we are thrilled to welcome him to the team,” said SeedPlus partner Michael Smith Jr.

In his new position, Lim is set to join SeedPlus’ operating partners Michael Smith Jr. (former CTO of HOOQ), Gabriel Lundberg, (former Spotify product manager), Tiang Lim Foo (who led Evernote’s market development in Asia Pacific), and Chirayu Wadke (former business development and strategic partnerships manager at Google).

Launched in May 2016, SeedPlus focussed on early stage investment in verticals that include software-as-a-service (SaaS), fintech, artificial intelligence (AI), cyber security, and internet of things (IoT).

It invests between S$250,000 (US$186,000) to S$1 million (US$744,000), leading pre-series A round for companies that aim to build “globally disruptive” startups across Asia.

The firm’s investment philosophy is to focus on operational involvement.

It has raised investments from Cisco, World Bank’s IFC, SGInnovate, Accel Partners, RNT Associates and Eight Roads.

Lim Der Shing himself is known as co-founder and CEO of JobsCentral, which was acquired by US-based CareerBuilder in 2011. The startup grew from a two-man company to over 150 headcount in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia without any external funding; it claimed to be profitable before its acquisition.

Since 2009, Lim has been actively investing various tech startups as an angel investor. He joined the Jungle Ventures as Venture Partner in 2012, and has invested directly in 17 startups and indirectly in “hundreds more” via five Southeast Asian VCs.

Lim is also a board member for ITE, ACE and SPRING Singapore. He was also part of the main committee for the Committee on the Future Economy and co-led the startup work group, and volunteers in the skills future subcommittee of SWCDC.
