gojek Founder and Global CEO Nadiem Makarim

Former gojek CEO and co-founder Nadiem Makarim has been named as Indonesia’s Minister of Education and Culture.

With the appointment, he has also broken the record of being the youngest ever minister of education that the country has ever appointed in history, at just 35-year-old.

Announced by President Joko Widodo at Merdeka Palace this morning, the announcement confirmed the speculation that has been growing in the past days since Makarim made an appearance at the Palace on Monday.

At the same day, he had also announced his resignation from the company.

Rumours of a startup founder to be named as a minister in Indonesia’s upcoming cabinet has been circulating since months before the President’s second inauguration.

Following Makarim’s resignation, gojek has named Kevin Aluwi and Andre Sulistyo as Co-CEOs.
