Tuition classes are a big business in Singapore, and Cudy wants to make it more accessible

Singapore-based edutech startup Cudy today announced an undisclosed “six-figure” seed funding round from undisclosed strategic investors.

The company plans to use the new funding to launch new services, develop their back-end technology, and support go-to-market initiatives.

Launched in 2018, Cudy is a platform that enables students to take real-time online tuition classes.

Tuition classes are a big business in Singapore, where parents would willingly spend a fortune to support their children’s academic success through participation in cram schools.

However, for families from a lower socio-economic background may be prevented from accessing the same level of service as the more privileged ones –a problem that Cudy is aiming to solve.

Apart from making tuition classes more accessible, Cudy also aims to help individual freelance tutors scale their teaching business online.

The platform has 500 freelance tutors signing up since their launch and has partnered with tuition centres in Singapore.

Cudy was founded by Alexander Lim, an undergraduate student from the School of Information Systems in Singapore Management University (SMU).

Lim plans to place his undergraduate education at SMU on hold while he is working to realise the startup’s vision.

Cudy itself was first conceived under the SMU IIE Accelerator Program and is also supported by Grey Adventures from Grey Group.

Alexander Lim was formerly attached to Pricewaterhouse Coopers Singapore’s Human Resources Department after his A Level examination in 2015 and was the Deputy Manpower Officer of an active battalion in the Singapore Armed Forces in 2016.
