Players in Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggy report that the game is functioning perfectly well
When Pokémon Go was released to huge fanfare in Southeast Asia on August 6, 2016, Myanmar was conspicuously absent from the list.
However, the dismay of Burmese fans was soon allayed when players in Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggy discovered the game worked like a peach, despite its exclusion from Niantic’s announcement. No official explanation was given for its absence.
The Myanmar times speculated Yangon’s close proximity to Thailand as a probable cause for the game’s accessibility (this does not, however, explain its ability to function in other urban towns such as Mandalay). Landmarks such as St Mary’s Cathedral and Shwedagon Pagoda were turned into PokeStops.
