Would you fire a toxic employee who is an excellent performer?

My wife asked me this question. What if you had a super excellent employee, who fits the job scope to a T, and had the experience to command the highest tier in the pay scale?

But what if that person had a toxic work culture, which was already affecting the rest of the company?

You would be definitely tempted to retain the guy (or girl/lady?). We can keep him/her seated in a corner, with no communication with the rest of the company whatsoever, to prevent “toxic spillage” but still get the person to perform their best for the company.

Like, really?

Some kind soul would say, “Let’s give him/her a second chance.” Or, “Maybe he is just going through a tough phase, or maybe [insert excuse here].”

I say, fire him immediately.
