The “hangout spot” is part of an ecosystem hub programme that Facebook has designed for Indonesia
Facebook has launched the Lab Innovation Indonesia (Linov), a facility that aims to provide a space for communities to gather, at CoHive Plaza Asia, Senayan, South Jakarta.
The facility is the second community centre that Facebook has launched in Indonesia, following Ruang Komunal (RuKi) in May last year. The difference between the two facilities is that RuKi is focussing more on social communities while Linov is focussing more on tech industries, such as startup founders, developers, and innovators.
Both Linov and RuKi are part of an ecosystem hub programme designed by Facebook for communities to grow in both online and offline platforms. Indonesia is the only country to be given the “hangout spot” community by Facebook.
Facebook Indonesia’s head of policy Ruben Hattari explained that the two “hangout spots” are a form of the company’s commitment to provide an added value to its customers, apart from the existing online platform. Especially since Indonesia is one of the biggest Facebook users in the world.
“On Facebook, we saw more and more communities gather to discuss all sort of topics, so we started thinking about what we can do to support them on the offline side,” Hattari said on Monday, June 24.

Linov and RuKi can be used to gather for free. Facebook will even provide supporting facilities for a presentation, and a mini kitchen with snacks and beverages.
The community only needs to register itself through Lab Innovation site and fill in the required information.
Hattari also said that Facebook routinely hosts meetings, trainings, and workshops on the location, hosted by the members of Developer Circles and FbStart. Facebook is also working with Hacktiv8 to host the “Developer Circles Javascript Training Course and Bootcamp” programme.
“At Lab Innovation, startup founders, developers, and innovators are able to collaborate, learn, and exchange ideas to help them develop their skills and network,” he said.
A year since its launch, the centre has facilitated more than 4,000 visitors from 860 communities in Greater Jakarta Area.

It has run a total of 212 programmes, hosted by either Facebook or the communities themselves. The events have covered topics such as tolerance, disability, mental health, and women empowerment.
Hattari said that Facebook aims to bring both RuKi and Linov to Indonesian cities outside of Jakarta, so that more and more communities can meet offline. The next event that they are going to host will be in form of pop-up facilities in big cities.
“There are many requests coming for us to held RuKi outside of Jakarta. Since each cities have their own chracteristics, we are still figuring out which city to visit and the topics that we want to cover,” he closed.
