He will remain on as a technical advisor
Eric Schmidt will step down from his role as executive chairman of Google’s holding company Alphabet in January, reported the Wall Street Journal.
He will transition to a technical advisor role and continue to serve on the company’s board.
Alphabet said that a non-executive chairman will likely replace him.
No further details were given regarding the reason for his departure, but Schmidt was said to have been discussing transition plans for a year.

“After ten years as CEO and seven as Executive Chairman, I can’t wait to dive into the latest in science, technology, and philanthropy. I look forward to working with Larry and Sergey on our future here at Alphabet,” said Schmidt, in a Twitter post.
Schmidt was a former Sun Microsystems executive before Google’s co-founders Sergey Bin and Larry Page brought him on as CEO in 2001 to give the company “adult supervision”. Schmidt served in that position until 2011, when Page replaced him.
Schmidt then went on to serve on Google’s board of directors as executive chairman, and then at Alphabet after the organisation’s restructing.
