From heritage developments and events – George Town Heritage + Hotels is at the forefront of preserving Penang’s culture.
Chris Ong, Founder of George Town Heritage + Hotels (GTHH) is at the forefront of reinvention – while merging the old with new.
This sixth generation Peranakan retuned to Penang to answer destiny’s call, to preserve and conserve the island’s shophouses not to be museums but living places for travellers.
His goal? To make shophouse living as quintessential to the Penang experience as villas are to Bali and ryokans are to Japan.
GTHH is now a portal for Chris’s portfolio of hotels to better serve guests with seamless bookings, reservations, and enquiries for each individual hotel. In the near future, GTHH’s digital platform will also serve as an information hub for Penang’s cultural events.
In the truest sense – where others saw decay and neglect, Chris visualised grace, beauty – and most importantly, opportunity to stand out from the crowd.
About the speaker
Investment banker turned international hotelier Chris Ong, first ventured into the hospitality business when he moved to Sri Lanka in 2003. His first hotel “Galle Fort Hotel” had won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Distinction in 2007, it was than later sold back to the Sri Lankans, yet to this day it remains as one of Sri Lanka’s top hotels.
Since returning from Sri Lanka at 2007, he had built six boutique hotels, although Glove Hall and Noordin Mews had been sold off as they were outside the zone.
The 4 heritage boutique properties Muntri Mews, Seven Terraces, Muntri Grove and Jawi Peranakan Mansion is now under the umbrella of George Town Heritage Hotels. Each hotel showcases a range of 19th century architecture in the world heritage site. They encompass Penang’s unique history and heritage, in stylish and comfortable settings for today’s discerning travelers.
