“Bentor” is a hybrid between motorbike and rickshaw; its drivers will be Go-Jek’s partners in running their Go-Ride, Go-Food, Go-Send, and Go-Shop services in the city

Indonesian ride-hailing giant Go-Jek returns with its latest innovation to maintain its position as the leading on-demand services company in the country. But there is something unique about the company’s latest expansion move; instead of partnering with motorbike taxi (“ojek“) drivers, in the Indonesian city of Gorontalo, Go-Jek is working with drivers of “bentor” (a hybrid between rickshaw and motorbike).

As part of Go-Jek’s effort in conserving local heritage, the partnership is the first of its kind that the company has done.

“Like ojek in many other cities in Indonesia, bentor has become an inseparable part of the everyday lives of people in Gorontalo. They are one of the key players in local economy; we see that their participation can be accelerated by the technology provided by Go-Jek. So, especially for Gorontalo, we will focus first on partnership with bentor drivers,” said Go-Jek VP of Corporate Communications Michael Say.

Go-Jek teams up with bentor drivers to open up opportunities for them to reap benefits from Go-Jek services. The company also offers affordable health insurance as a result of its partnership with universal healthcare programme (BPJS) and financial institutions, starting from IDR15,000 (US$1.07). It also provides mortgage programme (starting from IDR42,000/US$3.02) and a hajj pilgrimage installment programme (starting from IDR30,000/US$2.15).

“Go-Jek’s mission is to give an opportunity for partners to improve their livelihood in a sustainable way; this is considered not only from the aspect of income, but also on from the aspect of protection, establishment, and planning,” Say added.

Go-Jek will start operating in Gorontalo in May. The public can immediately enjoy services such as Go-Ride, Go-Food, Go-Send, and Go-Shop.

Go-Jek Strategic Regional Head for Borneo and Celebes Anandita Danaatmadja explained that in the early stages of its presence in Gorontalo, all of Go-Jek services will be facilitated by bentor drivers.

Go-Jek’s presence in the city is expectedd to benefit not only the customers, but also bentor driver-partners.

“The launch of these services will benefit more than just our customers. Beyond that, it also enables bentor drivers to earn income from services other than ride-hailing. Customers will also be benefited by such services,” Danaatmadja said.
