It aims to improve driver-partners’ welfare as well as the economic impact to the tourism destinations

Cab-hailing major Grab has announced a partnership with Iconic Transportation Services and the Ministry of Tourism in Indonesia to revive the there-wheeler transportation industry in various cities, with an aim to boost the tourist experience and attraction in the country, as well as to provide more options.

These three-wheeler taxis will be called GrabBajay in Jakarta, GrabBetor in Medan, and GrabBentor in Gorontalo.

Both Grab and the ministry stated that they seek to not only improve the quality of local transportation with digital technology support for the ‘Wonderful Indonesia’ campaign, but also improve driver-partners’ welfare as well as the economic impact to the tourism destinations.

“With ‘Wonderful Indonesia’ becoming a sustainable initiative from the Ministry of Tourism to promote these tourism destinations, Grab’s ongoing partnership can bring more tourists to visit these destinations,” said Arief Yahya, Minister of Tourism.

As per a data, there were around 1.3 million foreign tourists who visited Indonesia in April 2019, signifying an increase of 0.11 per cent compared to April 2018.

There are around 11,000 bajay (three-wheeler gas-fuelled vehicles) operating in Jakarta alone.

“By utilising technology, there’s a potential for adding more value to tourism destinations by allowing tourists to enjoy localised, improved, and unique transportation experience during their visits easily and comfortably,” said Ridzki Kramadibrata, President of Grab Indonesia.

This is not the first collaboration between Grab and Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism. Last year, Grab also launched #JelajahIndonesiaLebihDekat campaign with the Ministry of Tourism to provide a “safe and comfortable travel experience for tourists who visit Indonesia”.
