Hitchbird has over 5,000 wedding vendors on its platform in 24 categories across 53 cities in Asia

Hitchbird, a Hong Kong-based marketplace for weddings, has raised a seed round lead by the Malaysian startup-builder Catcha Group.

Also participating in the investment was Ken Tsurumaru, the former Director and a Co-founder of Catcha Group.

Hitchbird works by connecting couples to various venues and vendors across the world. It has focussed the vendor-side of service to Asian wedding destinations but has managed to attract customers from places like the UK, Russia and France.

Asian destinations such as Bali and the Maldives are famous for being sought after locations for weddings and Hitchbird has these, plus 53 other cities, as potential locations for that special day.

The funding will be used to help Hitchbird expand, which includes hiring, building new products and increasing its marketing budget.

As proof that they can continue to expand, the company cited statistics like the fact that there are over 30 million weddings in Asia every year, which puts the market spend at about US$20 billion per year.

“We are delighted to have Catcha’s involvement to help spur our early growth, particularly with their tremendous experience in growing similar businesses from early stage to IPO,” said Hoi Cheung, Founder of Hitchbird.

Catcha Group has worked with the Founding team before and Cheung’s company ‘SMART Exhibitions’ — which organised real estate showcase events — was bought by iProperty in 2012.

“Leveraging on our capital, extensive network and expertise of building disruptive internet companies, we plan to help Hitchbird accelerate its growth and expansion into the market,” said Patrick Grove, the Co-founder and Group CEO of Catcha Group

Besides iProperty, Catcha Group is the company behind regional success stories such as iflix and RevAsia.

While based in Hong Kong, Hitchbird has operations across Southeast Asia.
