With Netflix entrenched in the market and the possibility of Amazon Prime making a stop here, competition for the eyeballs of video-streaming consumers in Singapore is going to heat up.

To beef up its competitive edge, Emerging Asia-based video on-demand service HOOQ, a joint venture by Singtel, Sony Pictures Television and Warner Bros. Entertainment, has appointed a Country Manager for Singapore, OTT industry veteran Michael D’Oliveiro.

As HOOQ’s new Country Manager for Singapore, Oliveiro will be responsible for managing the market and will focus on expansion through customer acquisition, retention, and key partnerships.

Oliveiro’s extensive experience in this field includes launching and managing Australia telecom Telstra’s portfolio of B2B online video products, building video on-demand solutions for Malaysia-based cable TV provider Astro, as well as launching a Malaysian equivalent of Hulu at Malaysian media conglomerate Media Prima Berhad.

In addition, Oliveiro also co-founded advertising agency Batavia Brand Communications Sdn Bhd.

In related news, HOOQ clinched the Gold award for Best Visual Identity –
Technology, Media and Telecommunications at the this year’s Transform Asia Pacific Awards held in Hong Kong. Singapore-based brand consultancy firm Elmwood was behind HOOQ’s award-winning brand identity.

“Elmwood’s one team approach helped us to shape the business strategy along the course of the project. Their ‘big idea’ thinking, combined with regional sensitivity, delivered a brand which has been successfully deployed across different and varied markets, resonating with associate partners, carriers and customers alike,” said Allison Chew, Head of Brand and Communications for HOOQ, in an official press statement.

Launched in 2015, HOOQ claims to have over 35,000 hours of Hollywood and domestic video content on its platform. It currently has a presence in five markets: Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, India and Indonesia.
