The app store will focus on games, but there will be categories like education, art, sports and home decoration
Over the past 10 years, smartphones have transformed from cutting edge technology to become a necessary tool for day-to-day business. But as important as smartphone technology is, it would never have made an impact without the development of app stores.
A similar trajectory would be the best case scenario for virtual reality (VR) technology.
Yesterday, one of the world leaders in VR development, HTC, took a step in that direction when it announced the global launch of Viveport, its new VR app store.
The app store launched in 30 countries globally after being live in China since April.

“We believe Viveport is the place where customers will start their journey into new virtual reality experiences,” said Rikard Steiber, President of Viveport, in an official statement.
“Now, fans in over 30 countries will join us on a fantastic voyage, as they get to experience amazing VR Apps published by the best content creators in the industry”.
As part of the launch, HTC is introducing ‘Viveport Premieres,’ which are titles launching first on the platform. Some of the titles include, Everest VR, Lifeliqe and Stonehenge VR.
“With Viveport, Lifeliqe is able to spark lightbulb moments in the eyes of students learning science. Now anyone can walk alongside dinosaurs and explore the human body among the many experiences in our virtual museum,” said Ondrej Homola, CEO of Lifeliqe in a statement.
Furthermore, many of the experiences that were only available in China will now be open to a global audience.
The people behind Viveport have learned from the success of the smartphone app stores and will open the platform to outside developers.
It will focus on games, but there will be categories like education, art, sports and home decoration.
