The Directorate General of Taxation will issue a new regulation that will enable Go-Jek to assist the public in creating taxpayer ID number and filing annual report

Indonesian ride-hailing giant Go-Jek will soon be recruited by the country’s directorate general of taxation as tax agents, in line with the government’s initiative to assist taxpayers with technology.

Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani has confirmed her approval of the plan, as conveyed by Director of Communications and Information Technology Innovation at Directorate General of Taxation, Iwan Djunardi.

The proposal followed up a visit by Go-Jek CEO Nadiem Makarim to the office of the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday, November 7. One of the points being discussed in the meeting was technological innovation in taxation.

Go-Jek will play the role of an application service provider. The public can register to get their taxpayer ID number (NPWP) and to file for annual report (SPT) through an application.

ASP is a business that provides computer-based services through a network for the customers. The software provided through the business model is often referred as the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model.

“The public can register for NPWP through the ASP; so that he [Makarim] will serve as one of our agents. From the technological perspective, this is an example the things we would like to develop,” Djunardi told Kumparan.

Meanwhile, from the regulation’s perspective, the Ministry of Finance is set to issue a new, specific regulation for the matter. It is considered to be a “non-issue” as the initiative is in-line with the Directorate General’s mission to assist taxpayers through the use of technology.

“There should be no problem [on the regulatory side] as the Minister has also endorsed it,” Djunardi said.

Apart from technological implementation for taxation, Makarim stated that the discussion also discussed macroeconomics issues such as digital revolution, fintech revolution, and user behaviour in other markets.

“The Minister would like to know how it is like,” he said.

Related to digital revolution, he also discussed the possibility for the public to gain access to financial services that can help them improve their lives.

“Imagine if everyone has access to financial services, then they would be able to improve their lives, [be it in the form of] getting financial services, receiving services in the most affordable costs, and many more,” he closed.
