Indonesian state-owned telco Telkom confirmed that it has secured a new strategic partnership with global streaming giant Netflix, which will enable users to access Netflix on platforms operated by Telkom, IndoTelko reported.

According to Telkom Director of Consumer Service Dian Rachmawan, the two parties have reached agreement that will give “mutual benefits.”

“This partnership turns a new leaf for all IndiHome [Telkom’s broadband internet service] users, who will be able to access quality entertainment from various OTT video streaming services. After CATCHPLAY, iflix, and HOOQ, we have now added Netflix,” Rachmawan explained.

“In the early stage, users can enjoy Netflix on IndiHome with exciting offers. We are going to continue on taking the partnership to the next level to give a more well-rounded, high quality movie-watching experience,” he added.

In January 2016, soon after its entry to the Indonesian market, the authorities called out for a ban on Netflix due to its lack of compliance to censorship and business law.

Apart from obliging it to censor pornographic and violent content, the authority also expected Netflix to set up a business entity in Indonesia or foster a partnership with a local player.

Telkom has also temporarily allowed users to access Netflix only to cancel their subscription, and has been receiving criticism from netizens on various social media platforms for the Netflix ban.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings told CNBC that Telkom is the only internet service provider (ISP) in Asia that bans the company’s service.

With the new partnership, Netflix is reported to have agreed to comply to local regulations and law.
