She will be succeeded by Lazada veteran Pierre Poignant

Alibaba-backed e-commerce giant Lazada has today announced that CEO Lucy Peng is stepping down from her role. She will, however, remain as the company’s Executive Chairwoman.

Peng, who is one of Alibaba’s 18 co-founders, took up the position just nine months ago, after retiring from her role as the Executive Chairman of Chinese payments company Ant Financial.

Her appointment had come as Alibaba increased its investment in the company — pumping in an additional US$2 billion.

Pierre Poignant, who co-founded Lazada in 2012 and was appointed Group Executive President in 2018, will succeed Peng with immediate effect.

Over the years, Poignant assumed many roles in Lazada, overseeing many areas of the company’s operation including customer service, supply chain, and content production.

He will lead the company’s strategic development into new growth pillars, while continuing to manage Lazada’s operations in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

In an official press release, Peng praised Poignant, calling him a well-respected co-founder “who has contributed tirelessly to the company for the past six years.”

“He and the team of other co-founders had the vision to build our logistics network from the ground up back in the days when no one in Southeast Asia believed in e-commerce,” she said.

Poignant said that he expects next year to be another “watershed” year for the company as it continues to strive to become more efficient and agile.
