The Selangor Information Technology and e-commerce Council (SITEC), a Malaysia-based trading hub for e-commerce, will be organising a symposium to address best practices in e-commerce, with the aim of presenting a white paper on the topic.

The symposium will be held at the Selangor Digital Creative Centre (SDCC), iCity Shah Alam, on August 8th with the support of the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Invest Selangor.

The event will be featuring representatives from each sector of the e-commerce industry, from marketplaces to payment gateways, and logistics players.

Additionally, it will see participation by the Tribunal for Consumer Claims and Paypal. Representing the marketplace segment would be representatives from Lazada, 11street, Lelong.my, YouBeli, LogOn.my, and Mudah.my, with e-tailer representation coming from Photobook Malaysia and ClickAsia.my.

Representing payment gateways will be iPay88, MOLPay, BillPlz and SenangPay, while logistics players would be represented by Zyllem, PosLaju, Pos Malaysia, GDEX, TaQBin, and SkyNet.

E-commerce has been a steadily growing sector for the past two decades, and this has been further catalysed by the increase in accessibility to the internet in Malaysia, where an increased trend transitioning towards e-commerce has emerged.

Additionally, m-commerce, or, mobile commerce, is also picking up traction as Malaysians become more mobile and connected to the internet.

SITEC will also be presenting the results of a consumer confidence survey conducted by the council.

“The e-commerce sector in Malaysia has grown leaps and bounds over the past few years. However, consumer confidence lags behind due to weaknesses in a few sub-sectors. SITEC is committed to improving the state of e-commerce in Malaysia, particularly in Selangor, and this preliminary session has set its sights on identifying and assessing these particular issues. We want to catalyse the discussion between all the players in the e-commerce ecosystem, from consumers and merchants, to marketplaces, logistics players and payment gateways,” said Yong Kai Ping, Chief Executive of SITEC, in a press statement.

“This event aims to lay the groundwork for further discourse in e-commerce best practices, as well as spearhead the charge for immediate action to be taken. We hope that the discussions and brainstorming from the event will eventually contribute towards the rolling out of the much anticipated National E-commerce Roadmap,” he added.
