The Oncom (Online Consultation & Mentorship) app is a platform that aims to fulfil a range of needs faced by the Indonesian public.

Basically, they can seek consultations via live chat with experts and mentors from various fields, such as psychology, health, law, hobbies, and many more.

The main idea behind the creation of this app, according to the company, is that there are many issues that can be solved quickly and conveniently. But the problem is that people do not know who to turn to; either they are too shy to ask, or are put off by the likelihood of a high consultation fee.

Take for example, the question of whether it is safe to take paracetamol with anti-diarrheal medicine.  An expert guidance is required in order to ensure the validity of the information provided.

“Our hope is that Oncom’s presence may solve this problem and anybody can now easily get the information that they need,” said Oncom founder Bima Sastra Gordhi, in a press statement received by DailySocial on Thursday.

After downloading the app to their smartphone, users have to register themselves before they can choose the fields that they want to consult in, and interact via live chat with the consultant or mentor. Confidentiality during the consultation process is guaranteed by Oncom; users can also take the other option of using a pseudonym to ensure safety and comfort during the consultation.

Oncom consultants consist of professionals that have reached a certain level of expertise in their own respective fields, while Oncom mentors consist of students that are studying relevant subjects to the field. They are perceived to have the knowledge or at least the access to search for valid information.

The app is available for free since August 17, and can only be used by Android users for the time being.

Prior to Oncom, there are already players in local online consultation scene, such as Brainly (school subjects consultation forum), HaloDoc (video call-based medical consultation platform), TanyaDok (live medical consultation), and many more.

Feature-wise, there is nothing new or ground-breaking as the other players have utilised the live chat feature as used by Oncom. In terms of the fields being covered in the platform, Oncom does not focus on just one particular field, which might be both its strength and weakness compared to the others.

If the startup is unable to master these different fields, it will be beaten in a competition with other players who choose to specialise in particular fields.
