Singapore-based online grocer RedMart has appointed Patrick Teo as its new Chief Product Officer (CPO) and Executive Vice President Engineering.

Teo was previously Head of Technology and Site Leader for Amazon’s digital music technology department and Head of Engineering for Facebook’s Local and Entities division.

He also headed California-based online retailer and manufacturer Shutterfly’s technological developments as Vice President Engineering. Under his stewardship of 10 years, he helped the startup go public on the NASDAQ.

Teo, who has a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University, said he wants to make RedMart the top company in Singapore for tech talent.

He also wants to work with the Singapore government and other industries to “to further cultivate the talented engineers coming out of Singapore’s Universities and attract many living abroad to come back,” according to an official RedMart press statement.

RedMart’s President, Vikram Rupani said that Teo’s appointment is “a stamp of validation for Singapore’s maturing tech ecosystem and the quality of our own engineering core.”

“Naturally, we are delighted to have such an experienced software development executive to help us grow our online retail business and our reputation as a technology-driven business,” he added.

Founded in August 2011 by Roger Egan, Rupani and Rajesh Lingappa, RedMart is Singapore’s leading online supermarket, offering a wide selection of fresh food, household essentials and premium speciality products.

It has a direct retail offering and a marketplace platform for independent brands to sell on our state-of-the-art website and mobile application.

The firm has raised a total of US$55 million in funding till date that includes a US$26.7 million from Garena, SoftBank Ventures Korea, Visionnaire Ventures and Facebook Co-founder Eduardo Saverin.

It was acquired by Alibaba-owned Lazada last year, in a deal that was said to be worth around US$30 to US$40 million.
