An online petition was circulated to ban the Shopee’s 12.12 Birthday Sale commercial that is deemed too vulgar for Indonesia
Shopee was under fire this past week due to the petition circulated in social media in Indonesia that asked for its birthday sale commercial to be taken down. The commercial that features KPop star Blackpink was deemed as too vulgar, as reported by Detik.com.
The petition was then responded by Komisi Penyiaran Indonesia (KPI), the country’s Broadcast Committee, that proceeded to warn the e-commerce about the commercial.
Shopee has responded back to the warning, saying that the company has heeded the complaints from the public about the commercial.
“It’s a good feedback for us, but the commercial itself has been granted broadcasting permission from Lembaga Sensor Film Indonesia (the country’s censorship institute). We have followed all regulations before airing the commercial,” said the Country Brand Manager of Shopee Indonesia Rezki Yanuar in an official statement released yesterday, December 11, 2018.

Shopee has adjusted the airing hours of the commercial as a response to the petition.
The person behind the petition was Maimon Herawati, who managed to gather more than 99,000 signatures using Change.org platform until now.
The petition also sparked the official warning from the country’s Broadcast Committee, KPI, who issued a letter that says the commercial can breach the country’s law on politeness norm and morality in relation to the variety of public’s culture.
KPI also has asked 11 local broadcast station to stop showing the commercial.
However, despite backlash, Shopee has nothing to worry about since the company has planned to change the commercial starting from today.

“We have set the schedule for the commercial airing to end on Tuesday, December 11, and air a new commercial for Shopee 12.12 Shopee Birthday Sale to welcome our birthday on Hari Belanja Online Nasional (National Online Shopping Day),” closed Yanuar emphasizing on the significance of the matter.
