Yes, you heard it right, Mixed Reality will emerge as the winner in the AR versus VR race.

What is Mixed Reality ?

Mixed Reality, unlike AR and VR, changes the existing environment by embedding virtual objects in the real world. Thus, it makes the ambience engaging and worth interacting for the audience.

Mixed Reality will go mainstream

Mixed Reality has all the potential of going mainstream as it does not trick the audience by replacing the real world with some other area. Instead it scans the dimensions of the room and overlays it with digital animations. It lets uses be in his or her place without moving out or becoming trapped it in a dark environment. Mixed Reality avoids the discomforts of the VR environment like nausea and dizziness, as it lets you interact with the outside world without creating an illusion of being in a remote place.

MR will be used in different fields like education, healthcare, automation, aeronautics, and architecture. For example, using a head-mounted device in architecture and conceptual design gives architect the flexibility to move within the model.

The US Space agency, NASA has used Mixed Reality to train its astronauts on the space shuttle. This year, BMW also ushered in Mixed Reality for its upcoming new vehicles. The German automobile partnered with the game engine Unreal to virtually replicate its newer model to aid visual experience.

How does Mixed Reality work?

The way Mixed Reality works is that it maps the world around you, known as ‘Spatial Mapping‘, which is rendering real images and presenting it in a three dimensional environment. One of the best examples is Microsoft’s Hololens goggles, which merge the physical and the virtual world.

There are several companies currently working on enhancing the MR ecosystem. One of the most secretive startup amongst all is Google’s Magic Leap funded by Alibaba which is working on creating an alternative reality. Lenovo unveiled its MR headset which will be much cheaper then Project Hololens and it includes built-in sensor for inside and outside tracking. Acer’s VR headset announced during the Microsoft’s Build Conference is specially designed head-mounted device for Microsoft’s Mixed Reality platform.
