CES 2017 has come and gone, and as the dust settles from one of the biggest global tech conferences of the year, one company has emerged as a definite winner: the gaming company Razer.

First, Razer won the headlines.

Its three-screen laptop, named Project Valerie, predictably garnered interest from tech media like TechCrunch an C|Net. But, Razer also found itself getting headlines in more traditional outlets like CBS News and USA Today.

The USA Today article nailed exactly why Project Valerie was destined for attention at CES when Nick Schmiedicker wrote:

“Just look at that thing. It’s utterly ridiculous. And yet, God help me, I want it.”

With three 17.3-inch, 4K display monitors, Project Valerie is a laptop guaranteed to turn heads — both from non-gamers drawn-in by sheer curiosity to the hardcore enthusiasts drooling over the possibilities.

While Project Valerie was getting the ink, Razer’s Project Ariana took home the spoils.

The gaming projector won the title for ‘Best Gaming’ device, Engadget’s ‘People’s Choice’ award and was nominated as a finalist in the ‘Best Home Theater Product’ and ‘Best Disruption Tech’ categories.

Called by Gizmodo
the “biggest gaming idea we’ve seen in awhile”, Project Ariana projects the environment of a game onto the walls surrounding the computer.

So, if someone is playing a First Person Shooter, their character will still be centralised in the TV or monitor, but the peripheral surroundings will be expanded beyond the display’s borders and onto the rest of the room.

To achieve the effect, the company uses its lighting technology called Razer Chroma and combines it with laser sensors, 4K video projection tools and game code integration from business partners.

“We see Project Ariana as the future of gaming immersion and a great showcase of what our Razer Chroma lighting technology can do,” said Razer CEO and Co-founder Min-liang Tan in a statement.

“It’s great to see that consumers and editors agree on how exciting this innovation is for gamers. Project Ariana is able to offer a virtual reality experience without a headset and which can be enjoyed by everyone in a room,” he said.

Razer hopes to have Project Ariana available for consumers by the end of 2017.
