This would be the US-based sales tech company’s first AI R&D hub outside its homeland

The global sales tech company Salesforce announces that its artificial intelligence (AI) research centre outside of the US will be located in Singapore. This would be another investment made into Singapore after it has become the AI-based centre for the likes of Alibaba, Huawei, NEC, and local universities.

The new centre will be located at Salesforce’s Singapore office at Suntec City. It will be run by Steven Hoi, the Managing Director of Research Asia for Salesforce, Channel Asia Singapore reported.

Along with the R&D centre establishment, Salesforce committed to train up to 100 postgraduate students over a three year period.

Salesforce said it will open its centre door to the first batch of students from August 2019. The students will be pooled from three local universities: Singapore Management University (SMU), National University of Singapore (NUS), and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

The training the company plans to have will cover key areas of interest for the software vendor such as deep learning, machine learning, and natural language processing (NLP).
Additionally, the centre is expected to focus on specific areas of research catered to this region, such as language-based capabilities in chatbots.

In total, Singapore has a total of US$660 million investment into digitally important technology’s research and development, in particular, AI development. Singapore’s government also has set up an ethics council to monitor the development of the technology.
