Singapore’s ministry of manpower (MOM) today announced that it has prosecuted SRC Recruitment and one of its employment agency employees Erleena Mohd Ali for posting “insensitive advertising” of foreign domestic workers on C2C online markerplace Carousell, Channel News Asia reported.

Both SRC and Ali (who was in charge of posting the advertisements) face a combined 243 charges including the posting of the advertisements itself and their failure to ensure that the agency’s name and licence number were displayed in the advertisements.

They may be fined up to S$5,000 (US$3,600), jailed a maximum of six months, or both if found guilty.

Following the prosecution, SRC’s licence has been suspended while Ali has been deregistered as an EA personnel.

“MOM expects all employment agencies to exercise sensitivity when marketing their services, and exercising their duty of care towards their clients, including foreign domestic workers,” the ministry said in a press statement.

Between September 1 and 17, SRC Recruitment had been posting advertisements promoting domestic workers from Indonesia, completed with information on their names and ages, which the ministry described as casting the workers in “an undignified light.”

Carousell has responded by removing around 50 listings related to the advertisements.
