One of India’s three major e-commerce marketplaces, Snapdeal, has officially launched its private cloud platform, Snapdeal Cirrus.

This OpenStack-based (an open source cloud-software technology) hybrid cloud service — meaning various applications will be able to run in different parts of the cloud — will span across three data centres, a server architecture consisting of 100,000 cores, 16 petabytes of storage and a 100G SDN infrastructure.

The cloud platform is expected to help Snapdeal leverage on more Big Data to deliver more personalised experiences to customers, as well as ramp up the marketplace’s security, stability and speed.

“Snapdeal was born in the cloud, but public clouds stop being cost efficient after a scale, which became the case for Snapdeal sometime last year. In a short span of 10 months, we have succeeded in building an extremely resilient, scalable and secure solution,” said Rajiv Mangla, Chief Technology Officer, in a press statement.

Recent times have been trying for Snapdeal, which is struggling to increase profitability of the business, as well as hold its own against incumbents Flipkart and Amazon India.

Whether investment in new technology will lead to an improvement in its business forecast remains to be seen.
