Shukri is replacing Yasmin Mahmood, who quit the organisation last year to join a Jakarta-based tech venture
Surina Shukri has been appointed as the new CEO of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), effective today.
She is replacing Yasmin Mahmood, who quit the organisation to join an undisclosed startup based in Jakarta, in December last year.
Shukri’s appointment is for a period of three years.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
“I am confident that Surina will strive to continue building MDEC with her leadership and experience, and take MDEC to a higher level, not only in Malaysia but also globally,” said Gobind.
Born and brought up in Kuala Lumpur, Shukri has over 20 years of working experience at various multinational companies, including JPMorgan. Shukri holds dual degrees in Finance and Systems Engineering from the The Wharton School and the University of Pennsylvania. She moved to New York in 2001 and has been living there.

Last year, Shukri founded blockchain investment firm SheNovation Ventures in New York. In addition to providing capital to blockchain companies, the company also advocates and provides education and insights into using the tech for social good.
According to Vulcan Post, Shukri is also is part of the core team at Women4Blockchain, a female-centric group that aims to help build nurture the blockchain ecosystem by connecting and educating groups and individuals about the tech.
Aside from focusing on blockchain ventures, Shukri is also an angel investor and has been part of the 37 Angels network since early 2018.
Shukri is also a breast cancer survivor.
MDEC (formerly known as Multimedia Development Corporation) is the lead agency in driving the digital economy in Malaysia under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia. Since its inception 22 years ago, MDEC’s mission has been to develop the nation’s digital economy. Its implementation efforts are centred on driving investments, building local tech champions, catalysing digital innovation ecosystems and propagating digital inclusivity.
MDEC is also responsible to ensure that Malaysia plays an integral part in developing and nurturing talent to drive digital innovation around the world, while attracting participation from global ICT companies to invest and develop cutting edge digital and creative solutions in the country.
