Uber Indonesia President Monika Rudijono

Global ride-hailing giant Uber today announced the appointment of Monika Rudijono as its first president for the Indonesian market.

Based in Jakarta, Rudijono will start working in the company in January 2018.

Prior to joining the company, she has had more than two decades of experience in the marketing and advertising sectors. Her latest designation was as the President Director of marketing and advertising agency Grey, and she had worked at various local and multinational agencies in the Indonesian market such as MACS909, FCG, and Leo Burnett. She had also founded ISOBAR Indonesia in 2011.

“Ride-sharing has changed how Indonesia moves, and presents new economic opportunities for millions of people,” Rudijono said in a press statement.

“I am very happy to be part of this company, and leading a new, transformative chapter for Uber’s journey in the country I feel proud of,” she added.

In Indonesia, Uber has recently partnered with e-commerce unicorn Tokopedia to allow ride-booking from the online marketplace mobile app.

With competitors Go-Jek and Grab, the company is currently the remaining leading players in the ride-hailing sector in the country, which used to be rife with competitions among smaller companies.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi had previously dismissed the prospect of a consolidation of the company’s business in Southeast Asia, like what they had done in China and Russia, according to a Reuters report. Though he was not optimistic about the company reaching profitability in the market soon, he stated the company’s commitment to “go in, [and] lean forward” in the market.

Last week in Singapore, land transportation company ComfortDelGro Corporation has signed a deal to acquire a 51 per cent stake in Uber Singapore’s wholly-owned car rental subsidiary Lion City Holdings for about S$295 million (US$218 million).
