Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi will face several tough challenges as the new CEO of Uber

Ride-hailing giant Uber has appointed Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi as the company’s new CEO, according to a Reuters report.

He is set to replace Travis Kalanick, who was removed from the company in June due to the his and the senior management’s misbehaviour, as Uber struggles to improve its public image following various scandals that include sexual harassment and the use of a software to evade city regulators.

Citing two anonymous sources, the report stated that Uber’s board of directors have been meeting daily and deliberated on its pick for CEO throughout the weekend.

It also stated that while both Uber and Expedia were silent on the matter, an Uber spokesperson earlier stated that the board has voted on Sunday, but declined to disclose their choice publicly until after informing employees.

In his new position, one of Khosrowshahi’s first tasks will be to find top-level executives to run the company with, as Uber has been run by a 13-person committee in the absence of a CEO.

The role that Kalanick will play in the future of the company remains unknown, though he had earlier stated that he would support the new CEO “to guide Uber into its next phase of growth and ensure its continued success.”

Uber investor Benchmark Capital has filed a lawsuit against Kalanick, accusing him of fraud, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty.

If this lawsuit is successful, he would be kicked off the board of directors, and will have “faint hopes” to return to the company in a significant role.

Other candidates for the position including General Electric Co. chairman Jeff Immelt and Hewlett Packard chief executive Meg Whitman.
