A survey by Opera revealed Indonesians’ online habit related to the country’s massive congestion issue

There is no question about Indonesia’s mind-blowing congestion problem. In fact, a report by oil company Castrol puts two Indonesian cities –Jakarta and Surabaya– on the top five list of cities with the worst traffic congestion in the world.

The nation-wide issue encourages citizens to come up with different ways to endure the long hours of commuting, which can reach up to 3.63 million hours of commuting per day for 2.42 million commuters in Greater Jakarta Area, according to Indonesian Central Statistic Bureau.

With its growing number of smartphone penetration, it is natural that the internet is becoming Indonesian commuters’ favourite escapism when waiting for the traffic to clear or for the bus to finally come. But how important is the role of the internet –as well as all the features enabled by the service– compared to other means to spend the time with?

Opera conducted a survey of more than 1,000 commuters in nine cities in August 2016 to understand the comparison. Check out the result in the following infographic:
